HOLIDAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST
December 9th, 9-11am

A message from Councillor Tim Tierney

With less than two months until the Christmas holidays are upon us, I wanted to take the opportunity to have you all come out for a pancake and sausage breakfast at Colonel By Secondary School. We will be hosting you in their Cafetorium, with cooking done by Enbridge. We will also be collecting donations (food and cash) to give to the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard as the holidays are always a busy time, and I would love nothing more than to be able to help others have a warm and festive holiday season.

Please mark Sunday December 9th from 9:00am-11:00am in your calendars as the date of the event. I look forward to seeing you there!

GREEN CORNER

Tips for a "greener" winter

As the cold weather and snow set in, it’s a good time to consider some opportunities to reduce our environmental impact over the winter.

Heating our homes is one of our biggest impacts in the wintertime. There are a few ways to reduce this impact. Consider buying a smart thermostat (like a Nest www.nest.com or an EcoBee www.ecobee.com). These smart thermostats learn your behaviour and activity at home and seamlessly lower your heat when you are not home. They are estimated to reduce the energy needed to heat your home by 10-20%.

A more economical option is a programmable thermostat, which allows you to set a schedule to lower the heat at night or when you are out during the day to save on energy consumption. Programmable thermostats are estimated to reduce the energy needed to heat your home by about 10-15%. Both are good options and relatively easy to find and install.

Some other things to consider this winter to reduce your energy consumption:

Make sure to run your clothes dryer and other appliances in off peak hours (evenings and weekends) at which time the electricity is cheaper and cleaner (Ontario only burns Natural Gas during peak electrical demand).

Better yet, get a clothing rack or indoor clothesline and hang your clothes to dry.

These are a few simple tips that can help reduce your energy consumption and in turn reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that your household emits.

The BHCA is looking for a new board member to fill the Seniors Community chair, Community Outreach, Rinks Manager (in charge of all 3 rinks) and other volunteer roles. These roles would help the BHCA make connections with local, great businesses in the community, attend Ecological meetings with the city, or just help us out in general.

Just hit 'Reply' to this newsletter and let us know what you'd like to do, or if you aren't sure, just let us know and we can figure out a good role that you'll enjoy.

Please come join the BHCA Facebook group page.

The Facebook page was created by the Beacon Hill Community Association to contribute to the sense of community in our hood and provide another tool to connect with fellow neighbours. It's a place where we can share news about our community such as upcoming events, awesomeness currently going on or information that would be helpful to residents in the neighbourhood. It is not meant to be a place to advertise a business or to sell things. Your cooperation would be much appreciated.

Beacon Hill Family Fun League – Are You In?

We are two dads in Beacon Hill North who have grown a little weary with little league competitive baseball. So we are organizing a Beacon Hill Family Fun Baseball League (FFL) to take place in September and open to kids and people of all ages.

Every Saturday afternoon from 12:00 to 16:00 for four weeks on September 8, 15, 22 and 29, we will congregate at Eastvale Park in Beacon Hill North (https://goo.gl/maps/xQHfenHRzES2) to play baseball, cheer on the players and maybe have a barbecue.

We want to make it more than just a fun baseball game. We want it to be a community event – a very good reason for people to come out and get to know their neighbours and new classmates, even if they don’t want to play baseball.

Here’s how it works. Each person who is planning on attending fills out the form below as soon as possible. This will help us know how many people are planning on coming and if they intend to play or just watch. It will also let us know who we should notify if plans change due to weather or other reasons.

Then, everyone – any age, any ability – shows up at the field with equipment if they have it (including any extras to share) or just a smile if they don’t. They play baseball if they want, watch the game and chat with others if they don’t. If they decide to play but don’t know how, we’ll explain what to do. You don’t have to live in Beacon Hill if you want to attend.

So, are you in? If so, you can sign up at https://rmassociates.ca/beaconhillbaseball/ CCC If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with either of us directly: John McKay at johnnelsonmckay@gmail.com and Matt Kletke at rmkletke@rogers.com
