Hockey Day in Canada

Saturday February 11th, 2012 is Hockey Day in Ottawa! From 1PM to 3PM your BHCA will be serving free Hot Chocolate at our 3 outdoor rinks, graciously donated by the new Arby’s at the corner of Montreal and Ogilvie roads. Skate on over to one of our three beautifully groomed skating parks: Eastvale rink (between Annunciation of the Lord church, Henry Munroe Middle School and Ecole LaVerendrye), Jasmine rink (located on the east side of the east end of Jasmine between the apartment buildings and Lester B. Pearson High School), and Fairfield rink (located on the west side of St. Gabriel’s church on Appleford). Bring your hockey sticks, pucks and helmets, and join the thousands of residents participating at one of Ottawa’s 237 outdoor rinks.

The North Gloucester Giants/Ottawa Colts Football

The North Gloucester Giants/Ottawa Colts Football Club is recruiting players from Tyke to Midget levels for its upcoming 2012 season. You can register early by contacting the club registrar at nggiantsinfo@rogers.com and visit our website www.nggiants.ca for more information.

The Giants are also hosting a winter football conditioning program for players aged 8 to 14 starting February 16th, 2012. For a very affordable $30 fee for 10 weeks, this program will help improve your speed, agility & ball handling in the off season all while hanging out with old friends or making new ones and having fun once a week!

Even if you have never played before, this is your chance to see if you might enjoy football in regular season.

Please contact Louise, club registrar, nggiantsinfo@rogers.com for more information.

We look forward to having you come join one of Ottawa’s great tackle football teams! GO GIANTS!

Interprovincial Bridge

Phase 2 of the consultation process is expected to take place in February. Roche-Genevar, the consultant conducting the Environment Assessment will be presenting corridor designs that incorporate mitigation measures (for noise, traffic, etc.) based on input from the Community Values Workshops, web/street surveys and World Café events held in June 2011. When we have more information on dates/times/places, we will send out an e-mail and post on our website.

Speed Limits

We are asking that people to be mindful of area road speed limits especially along major thoroughfares such as Eastvale, Ogilvie Rds and those residents that use Casey to get to/from Shefford Road. There have been some close calls with pedestrians/school children these past few months. Note that the majority of our streets have a posted speed limit 40 km per hour.

Celebrate Summer

Mark Your Calendars! The 2nd Annual Celebrate Summer Festival is once again coming to Beaconhill-Cyrville on Saturday June 16th! Following on last years unmitigated success, the Celebrate Summer organizing committee is hard at work getting ready to bring the residents of Beaconhill-Cyrville ward a fun filled day of activities for young and old. Once again there will be bouncy castles, face painting and entertainment for the younger set. The older crowd will be entertained by live music acts, a beer tent and great food from local restaurateurs. The organizing committee is ramping up to make this years festivities bigger and better than last years! Come join the larger community ushering summer in! As we get closer to June 16th, more information and calls for volunteers will be forthcoming!

AGM

Our Annual General Meeting is taking place on Monday, October 24, from 7:30-9:00 PM at the GSAC (Gloucester Senior Adults’ Centre) in the Main Hall, 2020 Ogilvie road. We will be discussing many things, including some of the wording in our Constitution, a Farmer’s Market, and the Interprovincial Bridge. Please attend this important meeting, and bring us your ideas on how to make Beacon Hill an even better place.

Bridge

There is still time to provide input to Phase 2A public consultations on the Interprovincial Bridge.
If you were not able to participate in the first round of public consultations that took place in June 2011,  there is still an opportunity to submit your comments and feedback online using a “Do it Yourself Kit” provided by the  National Capital Commission (NCC) consultants.
Corridor 6 (Lower Duck) is one of three sites being studied for the new interprovincial bridge. This site is located opposite the Green’s Creek Environmental Center in Beacon Hill North.
We urge you to complete this process, as this feedback will identify the community attributes and corridor characteristics that need to be considered and protected through the analysis, design, and final selection process.  The web site may be taken down shortly, so please provide your input sooner, rather than later.

Note: We have updated our Interprovincial bridge web pages. [Click Here] to view them.

Rinks

This year, now that Beacon Hill South has joined us, we have a few more rinks to watch over. We need several volunteers to help us watch over the rinks. There are volunteer hours that can signed off for High School credit. Some shifts come with a small stipend. As well, we’re looking for a Manager to organize the rinks and volunteers, so if you’re a manager, or a student in management, leisure studies, or some other discipline that you think could help, please email us at president@bhca.ca.

Farmer’s Market

You may or may not have heard, and in case you haven’t, your Beacon Hill Community Association is working on bringing a weekly Farmer’s Market to our wonderful corner of the world. We need a few more volunteers to help us organize and make make phone calls.

Social Events

We’ve discussed hosting one or two social events throughout the year. In the early and mid-80’s the BHCA held several dances (for adults) and (for fun) Casino evenings. If these types of events interest you, please let us know by voting on our home page.

Lost Your Cat? We’ve Found One!

She’s a female Siamese. No collar, no microchip (we checked at Blair Animal Hosp,). It showed up in a member’s yard Sept. 17 (in Beacon Hill North, near La Verendrye Drive and Glenfern) and was hanging around the neighbour’s house the evening before, wanting to get in. It’s safe in a member’s basment for now. Please share this news so we can find the owners. Email us at president@bhca.ca if you know to whom this cat belongs. Thanks!

Memberships

Your Beacon Hill Community Association can only operate through the help of volunteers, and the money we raise with memberships. Please consider signing up to be a member and helping your community.

Please, Lock Your Cars at Night

An increasing list of cars have been broken in to.

Recently a large number of automobiles have been broken in to, and items have been stolen. The thieves have been checking for unlocked car doors, and if they find one, go for anything that is easy to steal. This not only means loose change and sunglasses, but cell phones and other electronics. Four of this type of break-in have been reported to the Beacon HIll Community Association (we referred them to the Police) – We can only imagine how many have actually happened. One resident says they witnessed 2 teenager-size males approach their cars and check the handles, then moved on. This happened around 11:30PM.

We ask that every resident:

  • Please remember to lock your car doors, especially at night
  • Report every break-in / theft to the police
  • Report suspicious activity to the police
  • If your teenager suddenly has extra cash, electronics, or a new iPhone, you can return the stolen items to your Beacon Hill Community Association and we will try to return them to their owners

Thank you for your support and vigilence in keeping these thieves at bay.

Celebrate Summer / Célébr-été

This Saturday, the first annual Celebrate Summer family fun fair is going on behind the Earl Armstrong Arena. With a never ending list of events you can’t help but have fun. From midway rides to great food, from hours of live concerts to face painting, there’s something for everyone of any age. Founder and Sponsor Councillor Tim Tierney has made sure that this free, day-long event will be something that the entire ward can be proud of. The fun starts at 9 am with a free pancake breakfast. Pancakes will be flipped by Councillor Tierney and the presidents of the community associations from with the Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward. Visit www.beaconhillcyrville.ca/en/celebrate.aspx for a list of events and activities.

Bridge Consultations

The bridge issue is pressing and, at the moment, is in high gear. There are consultation and community value workshops going on around the city over the summer. The list of events will be posted HERE, www.BHCA.ca/issues/the-bridge. WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU about what you want and how you would like to volunteer to help when it comes to the interprovincial bridge. Without your voice this pitting of community vs community will remain just that instead of being a fact-based, objective project. We’re trying to achieve a  transparent and fair selection process that takes into account all possible pitfalls and benefits.

For all bridge related issues and to volunteer, please contact: bridge@bhca.ca

Summer Camps

With summer around the corner, do you know what you’re doing with your kids for the next 2 months? Fret not, your BHCA is working for you. Click here to find a (non-exhaustive) list of summer camps in our community, www.BHCA.ca/summer-camps-2011. If you know of others, let us know and they’ll be added.

Membership

We have gone and made joining the BHCA even easier. We now have a Paypal account to speed up and simplify memberships. Please consider joining us as memberships are our main source of funding for sponsoring local groups, sponsoring Celebrate Summer, and potentially a bridge campaign. Visit www.BHCA.ca/membership for an easy to use sign-up form.
