The BEACON

Canada Day 2018

This year’s BHCA Fireworks Show is brought to you in part thanks to a generous donation from Action Martial Arts.

Canada Day Picnic in the Park – July 1st

10am-2pm

Our tradition of hosting a picnic in the park is alive and well.

Please bring your friends and family with you to 2130 Radford court at the Beacon Hill Community Centre (behind the white church on Ogilvie road) for music and fun, along with singing O Canada at noon with a giant Canadian flag.

NOTE: It’s going to be a hot one, please come prepared for lots of sun and heat!

Special guest Councillor Tim Tierney will be there serving up free hot dogs from 11:30 until we run out!

It will be all kinds of family fun!

FIREWORKS JULY 2 (NOT JULY 1)!!!

We will be launching a crazy amount of fireworks…

IN LOYOLA PARK ON LOYOLA AVE

It starts at 9:30pm. We’ll have fun things before that, but we launch at 9:30.

We’ll bring the music, the bouncy castle, and the show. You bring your family, friends, some lawn chairs and a donation.

Please consider bringing a donation to the show (or donating at www.BHCA.ca) as your donations allow us to continue putting on fun, community-based fireworks shows like this (very) expensive one.

NOTE: There will be a ribbon cutting at the new splashpad, officially opening the play place for kids, at 7:00pm.

Please watch your email inbox for weather-related news.

Donations

As mentioned earlier, the Beacon Hill Community Association puts on the Canada Picnic in the Park, and our Fireworks Show at great expense. We can only do this thanks to (in large part) generous donations from members of our community like you, and a few corporate donations (shout out to Action Martial Arts!).

We NEED you to donate either at our events (we will be visible, as well as announce who we are over the PA system), or online at www.BHCA.ca using PayPal.

If you enjoy the show, please consider how much it was worth it to you to have a local, yet immensely impressive, fireworks show and drop that amount into our donations cans (or as stated earlier, online via PayPal).

Thank you!

Subject: Eastern Subwatersheds SWM Retrofit Study: Online Information Session – June 15, 2018 to July 13, 2018
To: Jolliet, Laurent <Laurent.Jolliet@ottawa.ca>

Hello,

Attached please find the announcement for the launch of the final Online Information Session for the Eastern Subwatersheds Stormwater Management Retrofit Study, an Ottawa River Action Plan (ORAP) project. The website will go live on June 15 and comments will be sought until July 13, 2018.

The purpose of the study is to identify a stormwater management retrofit plan that will mitigate the water quality, erosion and flooding impacts of existing development within the subwatersheds of Bilberry, Taylor and Voyageur Creeks, and the urbanized areas of the Green’s Creek subwatershed. The proposed retrofit plan provides a strategy to help mitigate the impacts of uncontrolled runoff from areas in the east end of the city that have little or no stormwater management.

The Online Information Session can be viewed at this link: ottawa.ca/eastsubwatersheds

Please provide your comments by July 13, 2018.

If you have any questions about the study, please do not hesitate to contact me.

King Regards,

Bonjour,

Cordialement,

Ride to Work Day!

To: All City Mayors, administrators and All Motorcycle and Scooter Riders
From: Ride to Work
Date: 05/29/18
Subject: 2018 Motorcycle and Scooter Annual ‘Ride To Work Day’

The 27th annual Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day is Monday, June 18th. Every year more than a million two wheeled moto-commuters demonstrate the benefits of riding, including: reduced road congestion, shorter commute times, more parking spaces and less fuel consumption.

Your city can support this event by proclamation, and also encourage riding by providing free motorcycle and scooter parking at municipal ramps and metered spaces on this day. Join hundreds of other communities as well as many motorcycle and scooter groups and organizations supporting this year’s Ride to Work Day.

Reasons to encourage motorcycle and scooter commuting:

  • Shared parking spaces, providing more parking for everyone else.
  • Fewer resources consumed per-commuter than other powered mobility options.
  • Reduced traffic and congestion.
  • Less commuter travel time.

We seek government, employer and community support and recognition of the positive social benefits of riding. Proclamations and providing motorcycle and scooter parking at no charge, are great ways to encourage this beneficial (and enjoyable) form of transportation.

Ottawa woman flooded with calls after Elections Ontario phone number mix-up

From CBC.ca:

A phone number mix-up appears to have turned an Ottawa woman into an Elections Ontario worker against her will.

Nancy Westran says her cell phone has been flooded with calls for help after voter information cards went out in May.

There’s a toll-free number to reach Elections Ontario on those cards, but the cards do not include the number “one” in front of the toll-free number.

ECO CORNER

The Beacon Hill Community Association would like to thank everyone who came out on Saturday May 12, 2018 to help make Beacon Hill a beautiful place to live! A special thank you goes out to Councillor Tim Tierney who generously provided shelter from the sun and delicious hot dogs for our volunteers.  Additionally, we want to recognize Action Martial Arts for bringing out a whole contingent of martial arts students who were cleanup superstars!

This year’s event represents a record turn out and we hope to keep building this momentum as we grow the BHCA spring cleanup event.  We would appreciate constructive feedback or advice for us to improve for next year. Please send us an email at eco@BHCA.ca.
